San Pedro

San Pedro runs along the north side of the Los Angeles Harbor.  Container Ships and cranes are constant sights.  Cruise ships dock here to take on and let off passengers.  Built on the side of a hill, the streets can be steep. It is a bustling community.

The hills of San Pedro are said to have been seen by the spanish missionaries and soldiers who came to inspect the area due to the smoke from the Native American's campfires.

Many residents of San Pedro never want to leave.  Many live their entire lives there.  There are creative eateries, breweries, artist studios, a playful water fountain and more.  The county of LA is currently working on improving the area that used to be known as  Ports of Call.

Senior Living Communities in San Pedro

San Pedro has two well known Senior Living Communities. Both specialize in Assisted Living:

  • Palos Verdes Villa, 29661 South Western Avenue, RPV, CA, 90275 310-547-9941 Assisted Living
  • Harbor Terrace, 435 W.8th St. San Pedro , CA 90731 (310) 519-0660 Assisted Living

Serenity Senior Living  (formerly Jo Ann Jurgen Home) is listed as being in San Pedro.  I have been unable to reach anyone there, or find an active phone number.  As the Jo Ann Jurgen home, they were a refuge for those seniors who couldn't afford  any other accomodation.  They may reopen, but that is not clear.

Neighborhoods

  • Below Gaffey- Below meaning South of Gaffey.  This neighborhood is closer to the water. There are many condos and apartments in this area, with a few single family homes sprinkled in.
  • Above Gaffey- Above meaning North of Gaffey.  This neighborhood is mainly single-family homes, usually with great views of the harbor. Having been built before subdivisions, these homes are each quite unique.  The streets here can be very steep!
  • Along Western- There is a business district right along Western Ave., but many townhomes, condos, and apartments are just in back of each side of the business district.  These are mostly newer single family homes, again with hilly streets.
  • 25th Street and Beyond- This neighborhood can be characterized as being either side of 25th street, and farther west.  There are many lovely single family homes, with peacocks meandering about as if they own the neighborhood.

Landmarks of San Pedro

  • Korean Bell of Friendship- This ornately enclosed 5 foot tall bell is surrounded by a grassy park with beatiful ocean views to the South and West.
  • Angels Gate Park- This lovely park is at the very tip of the peninsula. built in an older style, many families use it for picnis, and in the summers  go to see Shakespeare in the Park here.
  • Vincent Thomas Bridge- Although recently decomsissioned and replaced with a new bridge just alongside it, the Vincent Thomas Bridge has stood for generations joining two parts of the harbor.
  • Point Fermin Lighthouse (built in 1874)- Before GPS, lighthouses were used to keep ships form crashing into rocks or cliffs.
  • Point Fermin Park- This park was built around the lighthouse.  It is right at the very tip of the land. From here you can see endless ocean.  This park is a favorite for weekend family parties.
  • Moreton Bay Fig- There are several Moreton Bay Fig trees  at Point Fermin Park.  There is one famous one, right by the Lighthouse, which was planted in 1930.  They provide shade and beauty to the park.

San Pedro has some vibrant walkable shopping and dining areas.  Many artists make San Pedro their home, as well as many who work at LA Harbor.  The GrandVision Foundation brings live music to the Grand Annex.

Good Brakes and Planning Ahead!

How We Overcome the Steep Hills and More During Projects:

The main challenge for moves has been some of the steeper hills.  Caution is always taken to ensure safety.  Moves into Harbor Terrace and Palos Verdes Villa are easily done.

We have done several Estate Sales and Online Auctions in San Pedro.  The biggest challenge has been the steep terrain in certain areas.  Parking is generally available throughout the upper part of the city.  Parking in the areas closer to the water is tighter, and less available.  This is solved for Online Auctions by preparing a schedule of pick-up times, so everyone does not try to come at once.

Before we set up a move or a Sale, or a Pick-up we review the needs of the property.  Each property is different.  Tim is a strategist, and he will have a plan in mind for the logistics of your move or sale so that safety of all concerned and ease of movement is maximized.
